Geral Information:   The Cobalt Cafe

Since the Cobalt Café moved from Ventura Blvd. in the mid 90's it's made a name for itself as the valley's premier all age venue. The unassuming grayish, blue lit exterior doesn't look like much during the day, but when night comes around and the kids start littering the streets to get in, it can't be missed.

The Atmosphere:

From the outside, the Cobalt is a mysterious venue with its fogged windows and dark exterior. There's a metal fence in front of the windows mimicking a patio and a black awning leading to the traditional door hustle. A strip of neon lights runs the length of the outside of the club giving it that dark and mysterious "club" vibe.

The Cobalt is the all ages equivalent to a dive bar. In most cases this would be a bad thing, but Cobalt pulls off this odd image in style. The venue is tattered, from the physical building to the chairs and couches scattered throughout the main room. The furniture is odds and ends, couches, chairs and lamps. The black walls are scattered with mural / graffiti, stickers and random artistic endeavors on the various doors and walls.

Cobalt provides a large sound and a big stage for the room. A backlit blue "Cobalt Café" sign adorns the stage, which only sets itself apart from the room by being elevated about a foot. The sound is loud but managed well by the staff.

Bands and friends can find a mild escape from the music in the back area where they have a few couches and a fake fireplace. Mostly its bands loading and unloading gear in this area, but it's quite the hang, as it's away from the music. This area of the club vibes of an abandoned kitchen with all the sinks and utilities pulled.

Between songs the room clears out to the front, almost religiously, and then shuffles back in for the next band, equally as religiously. Cobalt doesn't serve drinks (alcohol), no food either, but you can get a snack, and if you need it, there's lots of fast food in the area.

What you should know:

While there's not one "style" that the Cobalt caters to, they do a lot of hard rock, punk and metal. This is primarily due to its attraction as one of the valleys only all age venue. This is an "ear plug club," bring them.

Parking Situation:

The area around the Cobalt is residential. You'll find parking in the back and parking on the street. The area is moderately lit, but safe. Best of all, you won't have to pay for parking.
