As an artist recently signed to Columbia Records, and having just released your album, what has the experience of living and signing a deal in LA been like?
It's a great feeling to finally release that album as it was so long in the making, and a great learning curb. It introduced me to the US, an entirely different culture here than what I was brought up with, which is always a good thing to partake in life I think..... I love that LA is made up of its people...there's no other place in the world that pulls as many interesting/diverse people together.
Did you have to make any "transitions" between being an independent artist to being signed?
Of course, being independent meant having more freedom to do what you'd like artistically, but Columbia have been a very understanding label so far, and allowed me to finish 'Departure' as I liked, so apart from the wee growing pains, there hasn't been anything too major to adjust to.
You have a very unique sound, I've heard "female fronted Coldplay" from some people; how would you describe your sound?
...growth ....growth on the hour every hour ....vast and dynamic... poetic.... melodic...
What's your favorite song, or most personal song on your record?
Even A River. Bare my soul a bit on that one.. the unsure ness and all that stuff, plus it's a great tune to play live with my band.... powerful.....
Of your songs, which song do you think most represents your style of writing?
All of them...
Being that you're not from LA, has your experience in LA affected your writing?
...every place you go, every face you meet, every thought you think affects the way you write, the way you experience something and how you express that....I am into trying all sorts of different things musically that meets with what it is I'm trying to express.....I'm always learning, and taking it in...
Have you been touring and what has that been like?
I did my first tour across the US with the Jayhawks in June. That was great, and an awesome experience for me, you just fall into becoming 'accustomed' to life on the road....those guys are real sweethearts...
What's been the funniest experience you've had out on the "road?"
Playing the last show at the House of Blues in Anaheim, and having Pete Droge and Brendon Hoffman wheel out a roadie case and start playing poker on stage behind me, while I was in the middle of a song.... bastards!
Who are some of your favorite LA artists?
Jessica Hoop!!!! Saw her play tonight at the Hotel Cafe.... and WOW! Beautiful experience! Don't know if she's from LA though... System of a Down... Pedestrian... Walkie Talkie... Brian Joseph... Steve Reynolds... all great LA based bands.
What kinds of things are coming up for you in the near future?
A Jeff Buckley tribute in London in December, and releasing my album in Australia and NZ around February... but whatever... I just want to play and play and play and play and play and play and write and write and write as much as I can and make decent music.
