Lyrical Tracks v.1 : Saucy Monky : Flicker

Tell us a little about Saucy Monky, the members of the bands, and how you write songs, as a group or individually?

annmarie cullen & I are the primary songwriters in saucy monky. there’s really no set way – sometimes annmarie will have an idea, sometimes I will. we just happen to have a great writing chemistry. it’s really free flowing & natural. we general bounce ideas until it feels right.

When I first listened to "Flicker," I was immediately drawn into the lyrics, was there a specific story behind the song or was it written as a concept?

there was no plan behind flicker. it was very much a co-write b’t annmarie & i. we both wrote the music & the lyrics on that one. sometimes songs write themselves, and that’s what happened w/ flicker. it just came to us. and of course you draw from real life experience – most songs do.

How would you compare "Flicker" to other songs, stylistically, that Saucy Monky has written?

I suppose flicker has been influenced by our love for aimee mann & jon brion. I personally get affected by different writers at different times. I’d just come out of a writing relationship w/ someone who was a huge aimee mann fan – and I think flicker had remnants of that vibe – and those john lennon type chord changes. I think we have other songs w/ that beatle-y vibe as well, but flicker is definitely an individual, independent song off celebrity trash.

What makes a good lyric for you, as a writer?

well, if I react to someone’s words or story – if it makes me feel ‘something’ and that can be any strong emotion, or image for that matter – then I think the writer has done their job well.

What are some of your favorite songs by other local artists?

hmm, let’s see... adrianne – rome, paper sun – never alone, brendt j. dickey – too drunk to drive, garrison starr – 5 minutes, god, there are so many!! I could go on & on.

flicker
you're on the tip of my tongue
you're in the back of my mind
all the time
days melt into nights
oh the weeks melt into days

THEN IT STARTS AGAIN
I FEEL MY HEART FLICKER
AM I INVISIBLE
WATCHING YOU WATCHING HER
I FEEL THE LIGHTS DIE OUT
AS I RECALL
YOU DON'T REALLY WANT ME AT ALL

I see the look on your face
makes me feel so out of place
around you
slip where I fall
spiraling down, down to the ground

THEN IT STARTS AGAIN
I FEEL MY HEART FLICKER
AM I INVISIBLE
WATCHING YOU WATCHING HER
I FEEL THE LIGHTS DIE OUT
AS I RECALL
YOU DON'T REALLY WANT ME AT ALL
