Tell us a little bit about the unique makeup of the band?
The band started out through a series of unusual circumstances. My family
had a bunch of odd things happen at once so we got together to support
ourselves. It kind of snowballed from there.
You're in the middle of a tour, how has this been?
It's been amazing. We're in a big bus with a trailer and we've been putting
in some serious mileage from back home in NYC to the west coast with stops
in between. We had a great time last night in LA @ The Joint and Acoustic
Playhouse. Great vibe.
You're in LA now, how is LA different from other places you play?
LA is a mix of completely different from NYC and exactly the same at the
same time. I dig it out here. The venue managers, sound guys, and club
people have been especially cool.
Who are some artists that you would compare your music to?
We've been compared to Fleetwood Mac which I think is a reference to the mix
of the sexes, the harmonies, and the original music. We each have vastly
different
influences so its easy to compare us to millions of different artists. I
can think of a bunch of people who each of us resemble but the vibe is
really the blend between each of us.
What of your songs would you most want someone to listen to first?
'Hey' is the song that I feel embodies the groove of the music. One of us
has
this great third floor apartment view from a window in Queens, looking at
the Manhattan skyline and that's what the song is about. I really like that
song.
What is the song writing process like for your group?
Somebody in the band is feeling something and a song comes out. It's a
pretty natural experience. We've tried the whole 'give me unrequited love
song in a bouncy C' before and it just doesn't work for this band.
Who are some of your favorite unsigned artists?
Wow, this is fun. I like Michael Hedges a lot. He died a while ago but his
music will stay in my collection forever. He's an incredible guitarist and
his music is really soothing. I wish I was aware of him when he was alive. I
would've loved to see a live show. Was he signed? I don't even know. He
seems like an independent artist.
I'm sure this is one of the most common questions you get, but you recently
had an "experience" with a label, but stuck it out, tell us a bit about the
experience and did it change your approach to the business?
We learned so much about the music industry while signed to Atlantic
Records. It was a good education and even though it was a challenge it
wasn't a horrible experience. It was just the wrong boyfriend, so to speak;
nice guy just not right for you. We're just one band in a huge movement of
music people looking for the same thing and I think when it's found,
whatever 'it' is will be the beginning of something huge. Can't wait.
What are Cecilia's plans for the future?
The plan is to keep playing music, to continue expanding our reach by
connecting with the people who dig the band, and maybe find music industry
professionals who 'get' Cecilia and want to amplify the music to the world.
That'd be nice.
