So Unloved @ Anarchy Library
Many bands come and go throughout this city. Hollywood’s reputation for being a transient haven of lost souls, tortured artists and a happy host for near-cathartic co-existences with other equally troubled and transitive soulsearchers is time-honored. In this chapter, our path crosses one similar journey, borne from the so-called sinister town of SATANtonio (also known as San Antonio, Texas) comes a scrappy little quartet filled with the prerequisite amounts of angst, fire, callous disregard for their fellow neighbor’s health and safety - especially near a mosh pit - and ferocious energy with ample stocks in reserve: So Unloved.
Making their Los Angeles debut at Anarchy Library in Downey, the “Best Punk Rock Club in Los Angeles” per the L.A. Times, So Unloved was positioned second at bat for the much-hyped and locally infamous and rewarding Punk Rock Social. So Unloved took the slight stage thereafter with a surprisingly full draw for a totally unknown band in L.A. Also showing support for the band was Texas Terri Bomb, who was celebrating her, um, twenty-ninth birthday, and received a serenade by the crowd and the band.
Lead singer/guitarist Omega ripped into the crowd waking them up from their Renders-induced slumber like your Mom did when she walked in on your and your significant other while you both were busy. Her scathing vocals scorched a bombastic burn setting the pace for bassist Lauren to outflank with her subtle-as-a-stabbing backing vocals and crunchy basslines. Lead guitarist Cece skulked secretively on the stage, hiding behind her punky-coiffed purple do, tantalizing the crowd with teasingly tangy flirtatious licks and lusciously lavish lips while maniacally meandering within her microcircle of space, often bumping into the microphones, other band members and, on several occasions the wall.
The stage at Anarchy Library isn’t all that big, you know.
Drummer Chris rounded out the feel keeping in time with the rest of the inmates in a distinctively different way, handling his small kit like a serial killer handles a kitchen cleaver, as they put on a clinic in how to completely bitch slap a bad lead-in. This club really didn’t know what hit them, as So Unloved unleashed fireball after fireball of gritty rock and roll in the vein of bands like the Distillers, The Bronx, Kittie and 400 Blows, revealing absolutely no mercy in the energy levels, driving from 0-200 in two seconds.
So Unloved is one of those bands that comes along with only the mission to make music that will mercilessly rip your ass off. This quartet is fresh from Texas, eager to please and has the advantage of being very young: the average age of the band is just barely 20, with Cece a fresh 18-years-old, but well beyond her years in poise and talent. Following their short set, they were bombarded by offers to play other gigs and kudos from amazed audience members who stood in awe.
