"Xx inches" 20 Second Cycle
by: Lisa Del Hoyo

A packed house of close to 100 people crowded into The Gig this past April 27 to see Pitch Black and 20 Second Cycle play. Although the afore mentioned Pitch Black clearly brought most of the audience in with their rock inspired hip-hop sound, 20 Second Cycle kept the die-hards satisfied with their mellow rock tunes. Opening their set with "Abused", "Led," and "Mercy" many in the front of stage were swaying with early '90s rock fervor. The tunes had the distinct feel of teen anx, with a hint of the awkwardness and pre-pubescence that made bands like Smashing Pumpkins the answer 10 years ago.

The traditional quartet (with bassist Wade Hephner, singer/guitarist Tom Chappell, drummer Mark Marrow and guitarist, Jonathon Ray) also show the more humble side of our local LA music scene by giving props to their co-headliners, giving explanations for what inspired certain tracks, and constantly thanking the audience for coming out and listening to them.

The rest of the 10 song set mostly slips into slower rock ballads and showcase Chappell's quite and drawn stage presence, with the occasional outburst of energy. The band closed with a cover of the Doors "Peace Frog". The band did much respect to the song with Chappell's Morrisesque rendering and the audience was left with the feeling that they were the proverbial fly on the wall, witnessing four guys have a good time jamming to one of their favorite tunes.
