TLAMS ES presents
theLAMusicScene.com night at Common Grounds!

Friday September 7th at Common Grounds, theLAMusicScene.com welcomed Marcela (the Detachable Pianist), hosting and performing, along with That Fat Frog, Alek Vila and Jessie and theRaindogs. The lighthearted evening was filled with familiar faces and some new blood in an open minded, eclectic and friendly atmosphere.

Filling in for Honey Jones, That Fat Frog performed a semi-acoustic set (without their drummer) featuring some new material and some of their trademark tunes like Is What It Is, Sometimes, Leave the Light On, and Underneath You. Erin Hobson's unique style of writing mixes an alternative / pop sound with influences of Latin, Jazz and Funk. That Fat Frog has music available on mp3.com/thatfatfrog.

Alek Vila played songs from his self-entitled CD, Loveincolor. His unique blend of pop rock mixed with a certain eclecticism that is certainly a unique departure from a lot of what's going on in the scene. Alek makes a few of his songs available as MP3's on his web site and they're definitely worth a download. Check out Alek's song "Contact", a dark and driving song, or "Belief," a more pop rock sound.

Making a great night even better, Jessie and the Raindogs played an acoustic rendition of their powerful blues sound. Jessie's youthful influence on a classic sound is refreshing and doesn't go without notice. From classic cover tunes to well written originals, the Raindogs are one step ahead of the rest. If you want to watch an artist blossom into an "overnight" success, keep on eye on Jessie and the Raindogs, not to mention helping out by supporting the band!

Marcela (the Detachable Pianist) took the evening into its finale. Marcela has been a long-standing musician playing TLAMS nights and hosting them. Her blend of piano driven alternative rock can be describe best as a meld of artists like Tori Amos with a stylistic influence of NIN or Nirvana (on the piano of course). Marcela has a jaw dropping voice that can silence a room to complete attention. With a wide range of material, from her independent release, "Virgins Die In Flower Beds," to her newer work in progress, Marcela does not disappoint. Then throw in a couple unsuspecting covers and you're sure to have a good time.
