Powder : Unsigned On Sunset
I don't usually like to describe things by starting at the end, but last nights show at the Whiskey a Go Go has left me with the shocking image of Powders lead singer, Ninette, standing almost naked with the words "Psycho Chick" written on pieces of paper taped to her "chest." I have to admit that by the time the bands taken you this far, it all fits right in with the chanting lyrics; "I need a little help" and the ever allusive question, "who's the psycho today?" But don't get the wrong impression!
Powder doesn't miss a beat with their unique style and powerful sound. With a poppy alternative edge, the guitar and bass fill the music with a much heavier sound you might find with bands like Pantera, or even Stone Temple Pilots, with hints of the classic rock sound. And don't be distracted by the drummer wrapped in Christmas lights, he's still laying down some scorching backbeats that keep the music driving forward and the show alive.
Ninette has a great voice, catchy lyrics and what can be described as, at times, unusual falsettos. I do no justice to Powder by comparing Ninette's voice to artists like Alanis Morrisette, but I definitely hear hints. However, Ninette could easily be compared to many of today's female, modern, aggressive alternative pop vocalists, because she is both familiar and unique at the same time.
Add a little techno touch to Powder and you're going to have to seem them for yourself! I mean, so far I've said they mix pop, metal, techno and hard rock; but it's all there in a well-packaged sound. The band covered a Led Zeppelin tune, which they buried so well within their own sound, that I found myself questioning if it was even a cover. You're likely to leave a Powder show chanting, "I don't want to wear red" or "I need a little help." The music is well arranged and catchy.
There are not a lot of people that could pull this off like these four did. The band is musically unique and presents a stage show that'll catch you off guard. Best of all you can tell that they really enjoy what they do. The bottom line, when it comes to Powder, they don't need the fancy stage show to present they're own unique style. Ninette has a great voice which plays an interesting role in their heavy sound.
If you want to hear a sampling of Powders sound, I found one, that's right one, as in singular, MP3 available on their web site. Check it out!
