That Fat Frog : Common Grounds
Writing about That Fat Frog feels like I'm giving away one of the best-kept secrets of the LA music scene. Never have I felt so adamant about a band and the music they perform. If you get a chance to see them live they'll take you from blistering high emotional excitement and drop you somewhere in between everything else.
That Fat Frog blends Jazz, Latin and funk influences with an alternative edge, into a truly unique sound. Vocalist / Guitarist Erin Hobson delivers heart felt lyrics song after song, not to mention some amazing guitar playing. Bassist Dave Avenius provides the funky groove that you'll come to know as part of their signature sound, and with Shay Godwin on the drums, they bring it all together with rhythm and style that is uniquely their own.
This alternative band mixes influences from Ani Difranco, Dave Matthews to Joe Pass and James Brown? You're just going to have to see it for yourself. It's truly a cornucopia of styles that blend into something completely different. Whether your listening to one of their R&B ballads or a funky groove in odd time, they definitely bring something new to the table.
This band is what you get when you take away the glitz and glamour and focus in on the soul. Unfortunately the band doesn't have a CD available, but I know from talking with them recently that they plan on releasing their own live bootleg, something you don't see that often!
